There are moments in everyones lives where you are met at a crossroads of choice. A choice holding many factors, that eventually dictate the trajectory of a persons life. The largest parts of my work has been at moments of crossroads. A strange feeling with the likeness of when lightning strikes. A moment before impact. The calmness before violence.
I arrived to the United Kingdom in the Winter of 2012. I arrived as a refugee. Not knowing this would be the first time I'd be in a country the longest without leaving. My parents didn't have the easiest life. But they made it their lifes mission to give me freedoms they dreamed of. After many failures of settlement across many countries, I felt the weight of their struggles. What it felt to lose. What it felt to win, to lose it all again. I wish to convey the strangeness of my childhood through all my works.
I struggled with memory of childhood as I got older. I felt more and more slip away of my life as a child. It felt seperate from me. Like a bad dream. My nostalgia imprisoned me. The highest high was nostalgia. Born in the middle of my parents travels, i constantly questioned my place on this strange planet. We are given light and to the creator we shall return. Nostalgia consumes my soul.
Choosing a medium to express your inner world is truely a transformative act. For many, such as photography, the process opens a window to the soul, allowing it to grow in unexpected and powerful ways. Over a couple years of documentation, fragments of identity emerge, decay and are born. As you age emotions soften and intensify as life brings on challenges. Between those challenges, a narrative grows. I believe its important that you make note of that. We are one body. Each photography becomes a silent dissesction, a rectangle of infinity, holding truths and lies that I do not wish to have in writing. To deny and accept alltogether. This endevor is not merely about self discovery and acceptance. Your images serve as mirrors, they stare back, confronting what you see, reflecting the complexities within, creating pathways that evolve with time. One gradually assembles a harsh nature of the self. Embracing both the visble and the concealed.
